IT’S BEEN a long time coming, but I’m delighted to announce that I shall be taking a 5-day tour to Colditz and Stalag Luft III – the site of the Great Escape – on Monday 17 October 2022.

This is going to be an awesome trip, and I’m thrilled that Tripsmiths are organising it. I’ve worked with them before, and they’re a really professional bunch. The full itinerary of the tour is on their website, but in short, we shall start at the site of the Great Escape near Zagan in Poland, and follow the routes taken by the escapers as we make our way to Colditz. At the end of the tour, we shall visit the superb Museum of Military History in Dresden.

I’m also delighted that the tour is priced really well – that £1,799 is pretty much ‘all-in’ and even includes flights – so you shouldn’t need to reach for your wallet or purse apart from buying the odd souvenir.

What’s even better news is that Tripsmiths are kindly offering paid subscribers to Walt’s World a £75 discount! Do note that this offer is also available to those who take out a paid subscription subsequent to reading this.

If you want to take advantage of the discount, just leave a comment below, and I’ll send you the highly secret coupon code that you need to quote when you make your booking. With the discount worth more than an annual subscription to Walt’s World, I think this is a great deal.

I really hope as many of you as possible can make it. If you have any questions, then just leave a comment below. All aboard!

The view of Colditz from the bridge into town. This would have been the first view of the castle seen by most of the prisoners-of-war as they walked from the railway station to their new ‘home’.
Exploring the cellar in Colditz from where Pat Reid made his escape
Inspecting Airey Neave’s escape route from Colditz
Exploring Stalag Luft III, the site of the Great Escape
The view down to the meadow in Colditz town where the famous glider would have hopefully landed
Entering Zagan railway station, where many of the Great Escapers headed after leaving the tunnel.
Two blokes called Guy at Zagan railway station…

Very interested in this, Guy - would love to come along. I’m likely to be in the US a few weeks before so need to do some number crunching first. I’m vegetarian, a paid up member of the awkward squad - would that all be OK? I’ll write to the company and ask - sorry, just thinking aloud! Thank you for organising this.
