When I was a civil servant I had an occasional role of scrutinising nominations for honours. I was never trusted with the big stuff but I did on one occasion uncover enough unsavoury facts about a nominee for an OBE to encourage a rethink from a previously keen department. In fairness it was more often the case that I was finding additional evidence to merit an award for community volunteers, small scale entrepreneurs and minor public officials. The fact that due diligence was lacking when the subject had a high profile sadly does not surprise me.
Fantastic forensic work, Guy! This case feels like tip of the iceberg stuff. It’s slightly annoying that she could take a voluntary leave of absence ahead of of what feels like an escape plot. Instead they should suspender.
