As today is the 85th birthday of Edward Fox, that reminds of one of the greatest thrillers ever made – The Day of the Jackal. During the film, Fox is often to be seen wearing a cravat, and it gives him that slight air of raffishness.
I think he looks cool, and if you pictured him without a cravat, he would just be yet another bloke wearing a jacket and an open-necked shirt – which is now a more conservative look than actually wearing a tie.
I think it’s time to rescue the cravat. It needs to be wrenched away from the image of the golf-club bore, and reinstated for what it is – a dandyish halfway house between a tie and no tie, as well as something that keeps you warm, and hides incipient ‘old man neck’.
Funnily enough, I suggested that a colleague invest in a cravat just the other week. There could be a trend developing here. Not like me to be in the vanguard of ANYTHING, but maybe I’m playing a small part in this new movement, Guy!
Elegance personified. And blue and yellow too! I remember Roger Moore wearing one in The Persuaders. Met him once at Cliveden. Up there with my favourite Bonds.
very impressive! how long does it take to put a cravat on and get the folds of the fabric just right.? Also what is the best fabric? I might have another go at persuading my dad to wear one.
Anything as deeply unfashionable as a cravat is worth a revisit. I remember my Dad wearing one just to annoy his sons.
I have a cravat and I must say I look *excellent* in it

Cravats can be very cool, but pairing with a pinky ring is definitely not.
PC-A. That's the post. 🙂

Try it while walking the dog
Agreed, it certainly justifies itself in my view, has a refined but still casual look. And it's unfashionable, which means it must be cool
